With Autodesk University (AU) 2019 in less than two weeks, I thought it’d be fitting to tell a story that is the basis for our messaging at AU.
As a start-up, we used to have quick, weekly meetings with the entire team called “Scrums” to keep each other updated and improve communication.
At one of these Scrums, a sales team member was explaining why some companies hesitate to implement Expense-2-Project (E2P). (E2P is our Plug-in which allows companies to bill projects for application use.) He explained, “Billing for software use is not an industry standard, so people hesitate to implement because they believe the Plug-in is a little too good to be true”.
This led to discussions about how E2P and our other Plug-ins were being branded, and how to help companies view their direct benefit to profit margins. This is when our President stepped in. “You know what our tagline should be?” he asked, “Don’t be a dumbass, that’s what!” He went on to explain that because our platform works on both sides of the money equation, it should be a no-brainer. On one hand, it saves companies money through licensing optimization and improved resource planning. On the other hand, it increases billing by turning software overhead into revenue through E2P. Less expense + increase in revenue = a no-brainer.
Of course, “Don’t be a dumbass” is a little too harsh to say to clients and has negative connotations, so it was transformed into “Be a Software Badass”. We want to help clients realize that there is money being left on the table; all they need are the tools to grab it. In this way, IT and finance managers can become total software badasses.
